What Do Fashion Designers Do?

What do fashion designers do? There are many facets to this job, from conceptualizing a line to creating a physical prototype. The design process can take up to six months, depending on the specialty. Some fashion designers release new designs every month, while others spend months perfecting their designs and bringing them to production. Some fashion designers sell their work online, outside of brick-and-mortar stores, and also sell directly to consumers. Some of their work includes creating clothing for men, women, children, and even pets. Some fashion designers also assist with the production of casual wear, sportswear, evening wear, maternity apparel, and intimate apparel.

Several aspects of the job involve incorporating the designer’s unique vision and creativity into a final product. Creating a basic design involves sketching out a storyboard, working with a dummy, or sewing pieces of fabric together. This is the time when the designer puts his or her vision into a visual form. The designer then works to develop the first basic prototype. This process is an integral part of the design process.

Aside from having an eye for color and design, a fashion designer must be an excellent communicator. An excellent communicator, a strong sense of proportion, and a love of beauty are essential qualities for a successful career in fashion design. A good eye for detail is also an asset, as well as excellent problem solving skills. As an added bonus, a fashion designer must have a thorough understanding of patternmaking and sewing.
